Nonlinguistic reperesentation gives students the opportunity to answer and respond without the worry about how to spell a word correctly. If the students also has a strength in drawing or photogaphy, then they are able to tap into this strength to accurately respond to or demonstrate their knowledge on a topic. It gives the students who are not strong writers the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge without becoming hung up on how to properly form a sentence or a paragraph. Students may also be better able to explain their answers with pictures because they are able to think in pictures. I allow my students to use nonlinguistic representation in their Thinking Maps quite a bit. Since my class is a special education setting, many of my students have difficulty with writing their thoughts down completely because they are so hung up on spelling or they are unable to put their full thoughts on paper. This gives them the opportunity to draw out their thoughts and still participate in class discussion.

My Favorite Types of Weather on PhotoPeach
This is a great site. I made my photo story as an activity for the students to share their favorite things. This one happens to be about weather. I could also see me using this to show steps in a process, like how to do an experiment. I could also take pictures and put them in an order and then have the students write a story about the pictures. This would also be great to use at the beginning of the year to introduce yourself to your students and then have them create one about themselves.
